San Juan Islander Tami Oldham Ashcraft is the true-life heroine of Adrift, a film based on her book Red Sky in Mourning. Tami (played by Shailene Woodley) and her fiance Richard Sharp (played by Sam Claflin) are both free spirits who set off on what they expect to be a routine sailing adventure, never anticipating that they were heading directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.
As the storm hits, Richard sends Tami below deck where he believes she will be safer, and she is knocked out when their boat capsizes. After regaining consciousness, Tami has to deal with the realities of her horrific situation: the boat is in ruins, it is adrift somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and there is absolutely no hope for rescue.
At its heart, Adrift is an unforgettable true story about the resilience of the human spirit and the transcendent power of love.
