Job Description

Watching America ( is seeking volunteer translators age 18+ to translate news stories about the United States from Chinese into US English. If you are committed to translation and have an interest in current events, here is an unbeatable chance to perfect your art, publish your work, and build your resume with a project that advances the highest standards of professional translation.

Most foreign content today is translated with AI programs and software that don’t come close to what skilled human translators can do. Watching America is not AI. Our language team provides high-quality, hands-on translation that brings foreign opinion about the United States to readers around the world. This is what sets WA apart.

Some translation experience is preferred but not required. All applicants will be asked to translate a test article as part of the application process. We are ideally looking for native or near-native English skills. If selected, you will be expected to find and translate at least one article every two weeks (a minimum of 26 articles per year); however, as this is a volunteer position, it allows for flexibility in how and when you work. You choose the articles to translate, and receive a byline on every article that is published. After successfully completing six months, translators can receive a letter of recommendation from Robin Koerner, president and publisher of Watching America.

Watching America is an internationally acclaimed site that lets Americans see how the world perceives them and their government’s policies. Since it was founded in 2005, we have won mainstream recognition in the U.S. and abroad from such major media outlets as the BBC, NPR, Foreign Policy Magazine, and The Guardian. WA depends on a team of volunteers who benefit from the prestige of the project in developing their careers elsewhere, and who have a passion for the idea of breaking down the final barrier among peoples of the world — the language barrier. If this sounds like a fit, we’d love to hear from you.
