Position Summary

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

This position will work closely with Executive Director, Major Gifts, the Director, Philanthropy will play a leadership role in building a robust pipeline and implementing innovative strategies that focus on securing major/planned gifts for SMC.

The Director of Philanthropy is part of an experienced and mission-driven Foundation team, and is primarily responsible for the identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts ($10K+) to benefit Saddleback Medical Center. Working closely with Executive Director of Philanthropy, the Director of Philanthropy will play a leadership role in building a robust pipeline and implementing innovative strategies that focus on securing major/planned gifts for SMC. This energetic fundraiser will have a proven track record and knowledge base in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding major gift donors. Additional responsibilities include engaging physicians, volunteers, grateful patients and key community stakeholders as referral sources and cultivation partners. Working alongside SMCF leadership, the Director of Philanthropy will also act as an ambassador to enhance and promote SMCs culture of donor-centered philanthropy, and to identify meaningful giving and recognition opportunities to benefit the organization and donor wishes.

  • Manage a major gift portfolio of 75 to 100 donors and prospects through the process of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship

Identify potential major gift prospects by using multiple sources including research, volunteer-referrals, annual giving data and physician referrals

Determine donor interests within SMC through face-to-face, phone and virtual visits

  • Develop and implement solicitation strategies to secure major and planned gifts
  • Build donor and community relations through cultivation and stewardship activities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of institutional priorities and giving vehicles, with ability to apply knowledge and confidently articulate the mission, goals, and case-for-support for SMC

Work closely with colleagues to develop and implement cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies to grow major gift pipeline and build donor loyalty

Collaborate with various SMC departments as assigned to build positive relationships, boost the culture of philanthropy, understand clinical initiatives, capture compelling funding opportunities in writing, and support the stewardship of major gift donors

Identify potential planned giving prospects and work with Foundation staff to secure planned and deferred gifts

Work with volunteers and Foundation board members to advance assigned fundraising initiatives

Contribute to the success of donor cultivation and fundraising events that have a direct impact on the success of the major gift program such as salons, gala, golf, and Heritage Society activities

Ensure the integrity of contributions to the donor/prospect files and database

Ability to be at work and be on time

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Qualifications - External

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

Five years of related work experience in major gifts fundraising and a track record that demonstrates the ability to produce results, particularly in a health care setting

Experience working with CRM databases, specifically Raiser's Edge (preferred)

Knowledge of acceptable gifts policies and ethical fund development practices, as well as California law governing fund development and public charities

Ability to work independently and productively in a supportive, team-oriented department

Results-oriented and able to set priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written community skills

Education/Licensure/Certification:

Experience

Bachelors Degree in a related field of study required
