Job Title: Maintenance Technician - University of Akron
Reports To: Maintenance Manager
Location: University of Akron Student Housing Operations
Compensation: $24.00-$25.50 per hour and a comprehensive benefits package
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

This role supports the daily maintenance, repair, and renovation needs of student housing facilities at the University of Akron. The Maintenance Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager and participates in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to after-hours emergencies, contributing to a positive residential experience through quality workmanship and service.

Responsibilities
  • Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance work orders, performing a wide range of tasks including furniture repair, painting (outside of turn periods), basic plumbing, minor appliance and electrical repairs, HVAC troubleshooting, and light carpentry.
  • Identify facility issues and recommend corrective actions to ensure timely resolution.
  • Participate in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule to address maintenance emergencies.
  • Work overtime as needed to meet operational demands.
  • Escort contractors on-site to ensure safety and compliance with campus protocols.
  • Assist with room setups, furniture moves, and other special projects as assigned.
  • Inspect vacated units and complete repairs to prepare for occupancy.
  • Conduct daily walk-throughs of assigned buildings and report findings to the Maintenance Manager.
  • Complete scheduled preventative maintenance tasks in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergency maintenance situations.
  • Maintain clear, daily communication with the Maintenance Manager regarding task progress and updates.
  • Ensure work is performed with a focus on quality, safety, and professionalism.
  • May operate site vehicles to transport tools, equipment, or materials and to perform duties across campus facilities.
  • Perform additional duties in support of housing operations and resident satisfaction.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 23 years of general maintenance experience
  • Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities
  • Effective verbal communication skills
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and navigate stairs and ladders
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment

The work environment is mid-to-high paced with a moderate noise level. The physical demands include standing, walking, using hands, reaching, climbing or balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and occasional sitting.
