JOB SUMMARY:

The Pharmacy Tech - Admixture Specialist interacts with patients and health care providers to perform a variety of technical pharmaceutical tasks in the delivery of prescribed anti-cancer treatments following established standards and practices.

Scope

Working under the immediate supervision of nursing, admixture nurses, and Director of Treatment Services. Tasks include sterile preparation of parenteral admixtures – both hazardous and non-hazardous compounded sterile preparations, working within the electronic medical record, and performing daily cleaning duties. Pharmacy Tech - Admixture Specialists assist with inventory management and tracking of expiration dates. The Pharmacy Tech - Admixture Specialist adheres to standards set forth by United States Pharmacopeia (USP) 797 and USP 800.

Principal Duties

Provides admixture skills needed for patients’ treatment within scope of certification

  • Safely & efficiently prepares sterile parenteral admixture of chemotherapy and biotherapy treatments as directed by physicians’ orders
  • Performs accurate and aseptic sterile compounding of hazardous and non-hazardous drug using an ISO Class 5, vertical flow, externally ventilated Compounding aseptic containment isolator (CACI) or externally ventilated Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).
  • Monitors drug inventory for expiration dates and removes outdates per policy
  • Ability to perform basic pharmaceutical calculations
  • Possesses knowledge of chemotherapy and anticancer treatment regimens
  • Treatment regimens, dosing, schedules including pre and supportive treatments (Admixture Nurse)
  • Participates in ongoing knowledge attainment regarding chemo, and anticancer treatments.
  • Proper assessment and management of extravasation, and hypersensitivity reactions (Admixture Nurse)
  • Adheres to safety standards, in error prevention, and hazardous spill management
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the EMR, providing accurate and timely documentation.
  • Employ critical thinking skills and knowledge-based scope of practice.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team utilizing communication tools to provide focused and concise information, execute admixture orders with accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Follow practice standards to ensure consistency and effectiveness promoting positive outcomes
  • Follows and maintains best practices of various regulatory programs such as USP 797 and USP 800
  • Approach patient care with empathy and compassion.
  • Assist staff in clinic quality improvement measures and clinic standards of practice such as Quality Oncology Practice Initiatives (QOPI), Oncology Nurse Society (ONS), and National Institute of Safety & Health (NIOSH)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education And Experience

  • Pharmacy Technician
  • One year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician, experience with sterile compounding and hazardous drug is preferred.

Typical Physical Demands

Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects including the human body. Requires full range of motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Requires corrected vision, and hearing to normal range. Exposure to blood, waste, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, and hazardous drugs while utilizing appropriate safety standards.
